  • Some nice news: In the newest edition of Best American Short Stories, of the top "100 distinguished short stories," ten appeared in Glimmer Train Stories, more than any other publication in the country, including the New Yorker. We are pleased to say that, of those ten, three were those authors' first stories accepted for publication.
  • SUBSCRIBERS: please check the info here for answers to your questions.

  • WRITERS:

    • We are just two people with tons of great stories to read. If you will be kind enough to please scroll down this page for your answer before you email, I will so appreciate it. If, after reading this, you do still need help, don't hesitate to email me at linda[at]glimmertrain.org.

    • We always have a one-week grace period, so please don’t worry if you’re trying to make a deadline. If all else fails, you can make your submission by snail mail.

    • Email or address changes? Log in and click on Contact Preferences to update whatever needs it. Be sure to scroll down far enough to confirm your changes.

    • Forget your login info? Click on the red Need Password Reminder? on the login page. Your info will be sent to the email address you provided, automatically, day or night. If your email address has changed, so you can’t get that reminder, email me with your name and the old and new email addresses so I can help.

    • Not getting a requested Password Reminder? Check your junk-mail folder and ask your email provider to put glimmertrainpress.com and mail.glimmertrainpress.com on your safe-senders list.

    • Having trouble making a submission this time, though you've done it before? You might just wait a few minutes and try again. The system could be especially busy or could be getting a bit of maintenance, which rarely takes more than 20 minutes.

    • Solutions to common submission problems. Ideally, you will upload a .doc file, but an .rtf or .txt file will work fine, too. DOCX files don't come through quite as reliably, but if you save it as a .doc before submitting, it'll be fine. (If you do upload a .docx file, check the offered preview before finalizing to be sure the story wasn't truncated.) Want to include a cover letter? Have it ready to copy and paste in place. Taking the time to type it on the spot may cause the system to "time out." If you suspect this may have happened, just log in again and start fresh. Click here for information that helps most writers through the submission process.

    • Visa/MC won't go through on a submission that requires a reading fee? Be sure not to use dashes or spaces in your visa/mc number. Don't have, or want to use, a credit card? Snail mail is fine.

    • Errors in your submission? Send the wrong file? Typos and small errors don't worry us, and if a story is accepted, you'll have the opportunity to suggest edits. Unless there are serious errors, there is no need to be concerned. If, however, it's important to you to send a new revisions--and the category is still open--just go ahead and make a new submission, then email me with the document number for which you would like a refund, if there was an associated competition reading fee. If the category is closed to submissions (i.e. the week-long grace period has come and gone), be aware that if a story has risen up to the top 3, we will contact you, and you'll have the opportunity to propose final edits then. In the future, please always take advantage of the opportunity to look at your story in the offered pop-up view to be sure that you've sent the right file, and that the complete story is there, prior to confirming the submission.

    • Not getting our free bulletins? (Click here to see what you’re missing!) Ask your email provider to put glimmertrainpress.com and mail.glimmertrainpress.com on your safe-senders list. (And if you haven’t already set up an ID for yourself, do that here. If it says your email address is in use, send for a password reminder.)

    • Important changes to submission guidelines:

As of November 25, 2007, we've decided to allow simultaneous submissions. We've had a policy for 17 years against simultaneous submissions, but now that we've tightened up our submission-response times, we feel we can manage it better, and it's been harder and harder to support our position when it is so darned difficult to get one's work published. We do ask to be emailed immediately should a submitted piece be accepted elsewhere.

    • Our sincere thanks to readers and writers for supporting the literary arts!
